Getting Around Nevis
General Driving Information:
When on vacation in Nevis, aside
from driving on the left side
of the road, and observing speed
limits, you'll need a temporary
driver's license which you can get
from your rental agent, or from
either Charlestown, Newcastle or
Gingerland Police Stations. (EC $50
for three months, or EC $100 per
year).

Speeding fines are up to:
$250. Plus $100 per every 10 mph
over the limit. So unless you want
to pay the price, take it easy!

Speed limits are:
Non-built-up areas: 40 mph (64 kmh)
Residential areas, schools,
business districts:
20 mph (32 kmh)
Town perimeters: 30 mph (48 kmh)

Livestock and pedestrians use the roads
also, so please proceed with caution at all
times. Do not park along yellow-painted
curbs, or near water hydrants. Hydrants
are marked with a yellow painted yellow
square. Courtesy on the road is appreciated.

A toot of the horn can mean several things,
"Hi!", "Thank you" or "Heads up, I'm coming
by." It isn't unusual to see two cars stopped
side by side, with occupants engaged in
conversation.

Buses and taxis look similar, but buses have a
name painted above their front bumper and a
green license plate beginning with a letter "H."
Depending on how far you go, bus fare will
cost EC$1 to $4. Taxi plates are yellow and
begin with a "T." (Rental cars have red plates
that begin with an "R". Resident plates are black
and begin with either "P" or "PA" ). Buses run
south and east from Memorial Square in
Charlestown and north from Walwyn Square.
The taxi stand is opposite First Caribbean Int'l
Bank, (formerly Barclay's).
